Awesome Astronomy App

Ever look up into the beautiful night sky and wonder what you're seeing? What star is that? Is that a planet? Where is the Big Dipper?! I always do!! This is my favorite stargazing app, "Star Walk":
I introduce this app to my students every time we do an astronomy unit and they LOVE it! It is very difficult to teach about the stars and constellations without being able to stand outside at night with my students and point out celestial objects to them.  This app makes it sooooo much easier! It is an augmented reality app - amazing technology. It takes a live, direct view of the physical, real world environment and tells you exactly what you are looking at. Point your iPhone or iPad to a group of stars in the night sky and it will not only tell you the name of the constellation but it fills in the constellation picture for you!

You can spin in a circle on your front lawn and see every constellation above your head! Point it to any star and it will tell you the name of the star. It shows you where every planet is and even works during the day:

It has info on sunrise/sunset, moonrise/moonset/moon phase, and will tell you every planet that you can see and when:

Click on a planet you see in the night sky and it will give you detailed info on the planet:

It has info on celestial events such as comets that will be visible or upcoming meteor showers. It also has a cool feature called "Time Machine" where you can enter any date and see what the night sky looked like. If I go to my birthdate, I can see that the sun really was in the constellation  Sagittarius that night. I can enter December 25, 1776 and see what George Washington & his army saw above their heads as they crossed the freezing Delaware River. Love this app!!

Happy Stargazing!!
